I’ve been building fence across Texas since I was in junior high. Started patching cattle fence before most kids had their first job. By high school, I watched a crew constructing game fence at a ranch my dad managed and thought, “I can do this more professionally than what I’m seeing.” So I gave it a shot while classmates were figuring out weekend party plans.
Thirty-plus years later, after thousands of miles of fence from California to Florida (including a 75-mile continuous installation and cross-fencing portions of a 300,000-acre property), I’m writing this because too many ranchers and breeders make expensive decisions based on incomplete information.
If you’re running whitetail genetics, managing exotics, or stewarding family land for the next generation, your fence isn’t just infrastructure. It’s the foundation of everything you’ve built.
What’s Changed in 2026
The CWD Reality
Chronic wasting disease is changing how serious ranchers approach controlled environments. Texas Parks and Wildlife reports CWD detected in over 260 deer since 2012. Two-thirds of those cases linked to breeding facilities.
I won’t get into TPWD versus Texas Deer Association politics. We can have that conversation in person. But here’s what matters: whether you agree with regulations or not, professional game fence serves as your biosecurity border.
TPWD wants movement records. Insurance companies want security protocols (we have a security division now too, by the way). Buyers want proof of containment. Quality fence demonstrates you’re running a monitored, legitimate operation. Not just keeping deer in, but documenting control.
Trends We’re Seeing: Wildlife Values Rising
Through conversations with TDA members and our interactions as we work across multiple states, here’s what we’re seeing:
Trophy whitetail genetics are up substantially from five years ago. Breeding does with proven bloodlines command premium pricing that continues climbing. Axis deer and blackbuck breeding stock show strong market demand.
Like everything else these days, quality wildlife prices keep increasing.
The Bigger Economic Picture
Our alma mater, Texas A&M, had a 2017 study showing deer breeding alone contributes $1.6 billion annually to Texas. Hunting adds another $9.6 billion to the state economy according to TPWD.
This transcends individual operations. Rural communities depend on hunters, processors, taxidermists, feed stores, and lodging. These decisions ripple through entire regional economies.

Understanding Game Fence Height: What You Actually Need
Landowners call weekly wanting quotes without determining what they’re actually managing. Let’s clarify.
8-Foot Fence: The Texas Standard
Best For:
Whitetail management (breeding and non-breeding). Recreational hunting properties. Family hunts and family operations. Hog exclusion (in combination with predator apron). Standard deer containment. And better neighbors!
Reality Check:
Eight-foot fence handles whitetail does, most bucks, and general herd management effectively. We currently lease a property with elk and it holds them in well. During rut, a highly motivated trophy buck might clear 8 feet if pushed hard. But this isn’t common on properties without significant pressure and typically isn’t cost effective to go to 10 feet.
For most Texas ranch operations managing whitetail, 8-foot specifications provide excellent containment at reasonable cost. We’ve built well over a thousand miles of 8-foot fence that’s performed reliably for decades.
What This Costs:
Professional 8-foot installation typically runs 25 to 35 percent less than 10-foot specifications depending on terrain and materials.
10-Foot Fence: When Exotics Require It
Best For:
Ibex deer, fallow deer and impala (excellent jumpers). Mixed exotic and whitetail operations drive specifications. And most importantly, places with extreme external threats.
The Exotic Factor:
Body size doesn’t correlate with jumping ability. Blackbuck are relatively small but clear fence that stops larger animals. Ibex deer are exceptional jumpers when pressured. If you’re managing exotics, 10-foot specifications aren’t required but often help you sleep better at night knowing your herd is secure. Cost Considerations:
Ten-foot fence runs approximately 25 to 40 percent higher than 8-foot installation. That’s due to additional materials and heavier corner assemblies.
The upgrade makes sense when exotics or security demand it. For whitetail-only operations, the additional investment often doesn’t justify the marginal security increase. Animals rarely jump unless significantly pressured.

The Pro-Fencer Brace System: Why We’re Different
Most fence failures happen at corners and braces. After decades of experience, we exclusively use the Pro-Fencer Brace System (which we designed and manufacuture). Here’s why it matters.
What Makes Pro-Fencer Different
The 50-Year Fence System:
The Pro-Fencer brace delivers freedom, simplicity, and versatility that traditional H-braces can’t match.
Freedom: Works any time of year, regardless of burn bans. No-weld construction means no welding machines required. Critical when fire restrictions prevent traditional methods.
Simplicity:
Installation requires only a wrench, ratchet, and socket. Professional results without specialized equipment or welding expertise.
Versatility: Handles corners with kickers, gate supports, H-braces, water gaps, and much more. The system adapts to multiple configurations beyond standard fence bracing.
Available in multiple sizes (2 3/8”, 2 7/8”, 3 1/2”, and 4 1/2”) to match pipe specifications and load requirements.
Why This Matters for High Fence
Traditional H-braces using horizontal and diagonal compression members work. Until they don’t.
The Pro-Fencer system uses manufactured brackets with 1/4” thick, hot-dipped galvanized steel rated for the strength demands of 8 to 10 foot high fence.
Superior Fence Deserves Superior Support:
The Pro-Fencer system provides the support and strength needed for taller structures. It prevents the corner lean and wire sag that plague amateur installations.
That said, we will weld when specs require it or when it’s requested by the customer. We have a dedicated team of welders who can get the job done the right way.

We consider every environmental aspect of your property and the safety of animals you wish to keep in or out. Working in a timely yet safe manner, we deliver polished results that last.
The Qualified Crew Advantage
This matters more than most ranchers realize when comparing bids.
Day Labor vs. Professional Employees
Day Labor Contractors:
They hire from temp agencies or street corners. Different workers every week. No consistency. No specialized game fence training. They leave jobs incomplete for better opportunities. Unknown backgrounds and credentials. Zero long-term accountability.
J4’s Professional Approach:
Dedicated employees with 5 to 20 plus years of fence experience. Background-checked and insured workers. Specialized training in wildlife fence requirements. Crews stay on-site until completion. Period. Full accountability for quality and warranty work. You know exactly who’s on your property.
The Real Question:
When protecting substantial wildlife investments, can you afford workers who might disappear mid-project? Who don’t understand the difference between livestock fence and biosecurity-critical game fence?
That’s the question to ask before signing with low-bid contractors.
Seasonal Timing: The Q1 Advantage
January Through March Benefits
Ground Conditions:
Soil is workable. Not rock-hard from drought or muddy from storms.
Crew Availability:
This is before the spring rush when everyone wants fence.
Pre-Breeding Season:
Complete before does drop fawns in April and May.
Dormant Vegetation:
Easier clearing. Lower costs. Less environmental impact.
Reduced Animal Stress:
Deer aren’t in breeding or fawning mode. Minimal operation disruption.
For serious 2026 installation, Q1 booking is strategic. We run five active crews, but spring schedules fill by March.
Integration with Ranch Water Systems
Most ranchers miss this advantage until it’s too late.
The Common Problem:
Install fence first. Three months later, realize well locations don’t align with fence layout, or water lines need routing across established fence lines. Retrofitting costs double.
The Strategic Approach:
Coordinate fence and water planning simultaneously from day one.
At J4, we operate both J4 Fencing & Services and J4 Water Works. When planning fence layout, we simultaneously consider well placement for optimal pasture watering. Water line routing before fence installation. Protected equipment access points. Emergency access for well maintenance.
Real Integration:
On a recent large-acreage operation requiring game fence and multiple wells, we coordinated layouts before breaking ground. Strategic well placement, protected access gates, and water line installation during fence construction saved weeks of disruption and significant retrofitting costs.
Separate contractors who don’t communicate? You’re paying for that inefficiency twice.
Questions Before Hiring a Contractor
Don’t make substantial decisions based on price alone.
Critical Questions
Experience:
How many miles of game fence do you install annually?
Can you provide references from breeding or hunting operations similar to mine?
What’s your largest completed project?
Crew Quality:
Do you use dedicated employees or day labor?
Are crew members background-checked?
What happens if you don’t finish on schedule?
Materials and Methods:
What brace system do you use and why?
Do you use galvanized pipe and fixed knot net wire?
What are your post spacing specifications?
Do you provide written specifications?
Project Management:
Will you provide written timeline with milestones?
Who is my single point of contact?
What’s included in your warranty?
Insurance:
Can you provide certificates of insurance before starting?
Are you bonded, if needed, for projects of this size?
Red Flags:
Vague answers about crew composition.
Reluctance to provide written specifications.
Unclear warranty terms.
Pressure for immediate decisions on “special pricing.”
No recent references from similar projects.

Common Mistakes
Mistake Number 1: Choosing Height Based on Budget Instead of Need
Don’t let budget dictate specifications when biology should. If you’re managing exotics requiring 10 feet, 8-foot fence is false economy. You’ll pay twice. Once for inadequate fence, again for proper replacement.
Solution:
Fence fewer acres correctly. Start with core areas at proper height. Expand perimeter as budget allows.
Mistake Number 2: Bidding Without Site Survey
Fence specifications for flat ground fail on rocky hills, creek crossings, and unstable soils.
Solution:
No legitimate quote without property assessment.
Mistake Number 3: Cheap Corner Construction
Saving a few thousand on corner assemblies becomes tens of thousands in repairs within years.
Solution:
Over-engineer corners. Cheapest insurance available.
Mistake Number 4: No Maintenance Plan
Trees fall. Posts shift. Wire tension changes. Neglect kills fence.
Solution:
Annual inspections. Vegetation management. Immediate damage repair. Budget appropriately per mile annually for long-term performance.
What Quality Fence Actually Costs
Let’s discuss investment realistically without specific pricing (which varies by terrain, access, materials, and specifications).
Professional Installation Investment
Typical 400-Acre Operation (2.5 Miles of Perimeter):
Professional 8-foot fence represents one investment level. Professional 10-foot fence runs approximately 25 to 40 percent higher due to additional materials, heavier corner assemblies, and increased engineering requirements.
The “Budget” Contractor Trap:
Low-bid contractors may quote 15 to 25 percent savings initially. Hidden costs emerge. Project delays. Incomplete work. Corner failures. Sagging wire. Repairs needed in years 2 through 5.
Actual costs often exceed professional installation. Plus stress and potential animal losses.
Return on Investment
Revenue Protection:
For breeding operations, even small percentages of animal loss represent substantial annual revenue impact. Professional fence dramatically reduces escape risk.
Tax Benefits:
Ag exemption savings alone can justify fence investment within several years on properties of adequate size.
Combined Benefits:
Risk reduction plus tax advantages create strong financial justification before considering wildlife revenue, property value increases, or peace of mind.
Long-Term Value:
Quality fence lasts 30 plus years. Budget installations often need replacement within 10 to 12 years. That requires double investment over the same timeframe. We help you build a legacy that you can pass down to the next generation.

Why Book in January or February
Crew Availability:
Five active crews, but Q1 schedules fill by March. Book now, secure your window.
Weather Advantage:
Complete before summer heat and spring rush.
Planning Time:
Coordinate NRCS cost-share or other ranch improvements.
Final Thoughts
I started building fence at 14. Decades later, I’ve seen every mistake, every shortcut, every corner cut. Literally.
You didn’t build your breeding program or hunting operation on cheap solutions. Your fence shouldn’t be either.
Quality game fence protects substantial investments. It enables legitimate wildlife management. It secures your family’s legacy. It delivers decades of reliable performance.
The difference between professional installation and budget work isn’t just initial cost. It’s whether your fence stands strong in 30 years. Whether your genetics stay on your property. And whether you spend weekends fixing fence or enjoying your ranch.
J4 Fencing & Services has been building that difference since 2002.
